A sliding wardrobe only looks expensive when it is the wrong size for the wall. Too narrow and you waste the alcove. Too wide and the doors scrape the architrave, or the fitter has to send it back. Distro Direct sells eight collections in fixed widths, so the job is not to invent a custom carcass on the landing — it is to measure the room properly and then choose the size that is already on the product page.
Stand in the space where the wardrobe will sit. Measure the wall from the left obstruction to the right obstruction. That might be a chimney breast, a door lining, a radiator or a window reveal. Write down the smallest of three widths: one at the skirting, one at waist height, one near the ceiling. Victorian and 1930s houses move a surprising amount. The number you configure is the smallest of those three, not the most optimistic.
Height is the same exercise. Measure from the finished floor to the ceiling or to the underside of a cornice, again at both ends of the run. Distro units are designed as free-standing sliding wardrobes, not as full-height joinery that is scribed to a crooked ceiling. If you have a picture rail or a thick covings, decide now whether the wardrobe stops beneath it. Do not assume we can trim a door on site to hide a 30mm fall.
Depth is the measurement people skip. A sliding door needs a track and a carcass behind it. If the only wall you have is a narrow landing, a 600mm-deep unit will steal the walkway. Measure from the wall to the nearest bed corner, door swing or chest of drawers, then leave a path you can still walk with a laundry basket.
Once you have the clear opening, subtract a working tolerance. We recommend 5–10cm in total across both sides if the wardrobe sits in a recess, so the doors can run and the installer can square the carcass. On a flat run of wall with no recess, you can go closer to the listed width, but you still need room to tilt the pack into the room on delivery day.
Distro sliding wardrobes are sold in centimetre widths that already exist in the catalogue: 100, 120, 150, 180, 203 and 250 on the linear collections, plus Aurelia as 4-door and 6-door corner systems. There is no secret extra size in the warehouse. If your alcove is 167cm, the honest choice is the 150cm unit and a plan for the leftover wall — a bedside, a chair, or a future 100cm add-on — not a promise that we will cut a 180 down in the van.
Size and collection are not the same decision. Bamboo, Daisy, Linden, Maple, Olive and Vine share the linear width set and then split by colour. Aurelia is the corner family. Flavia is the contrast range with a tighter set of sizes. If you need to turn an L-shaped wall, start on Aurelia. If you need a straight run and a mid-price contemporary door, start on Bamboo or Daisy and then lock the width.
Colour does not change the price on a given size. Black, white, grey, oak or cashmere — where the collection offers them — keep the same figure. That is deliberate. You should not have to re-measure because you changed your mind from oak to white.
A sliding door does not swing into the bed, but it does need a clear face to travel. If a pendant light, a picture or a socket sits in the door’s path, move the furniture plan or the socket before you order. If the room is a through-lounge with a radiator on that wall, measure the projection of the radiator valves. Sliding wardrobes hide clutter; they do not hide a wet radiator.
Think about who uses the rail. A 100cm wardrobe in a box room can be the right call. A 250cm run behind a king bed is a different product. Distro’s 203cm width exists because many UK back bedrooms are a fraction under 210cm once you respect the door lining. Use it when 180 feels mean and 250 will not go up the stairs.
When the numbers are written down, open the collection page and choose that width. Delivery to the UK mainland is typically 3–7 working days. If you want the unit assembled, add it on the same page from £140. The fitter still needs your measurements to be real; assembly is not a redesign service.
If you are unsure after measuring, send the three widths, the height and a photo of the wall to the Blackburn team on 01254 937543 or WhatsApp 07305 069117. We would rather confirm a 180 than deliver a 203 that cannot turn the stairs. The right sliding wardrobe size is the one that fits the smallest number you wrote down, with clearance left for the doors to run.
